Onboarding New Employees
The onboarding path instead of 4 weeks of shadowing.
👥 PEOPLE & KNOWLEDGE
The first 4 weeks are expensive: the new hire gets paid but is barely productive. With high turnover this becomes a structural loss.

instructions in the path
Instead of 4 weeks of shadowing a foreman, the instruction itself guides the new hire through the first activities. You build an onboarding path: day 1 (plant tour via QR, PPE, safety briefing) → week 1 (first simple activity, shift routine, 6S) → weeks 2-4 (further activities, setup, quality checks, first independence). Existing use case instructions are linked instead of rewritten.
⚠️
The trigger - how do you recognize it?
- New employees need 4+ weeks to become productive
- Onboarding depends on 1-2 trainers whose time is scarce
- Seasonal workers or high turnover repeat the expensive game constantly
- Non-native speakers take especially long - or need a translator
- There is an onboarding plan on paper, but every trainer does it differently
ℹ️
How it works with GIRI
1. Identify the 10-15 most important activities of the first 4 weeks. 2. One instruction per activity. 3. Structure them as a path: day 1 → week 4. 4. Progress check per employee. 5. Publish multilingually - GIRI translates automatically.
In the pilot context: onboarding is the natural scaling area in Bootcamp Phase 3 (Scale It).
💡
The value
- -50% time-to-productivity
- -40% onboarding effort for trainers (REWO Polish plant case)
- Scalable and trainer-independent, can run in parallel
- Consistent quality - every new hire gets the same onboarding
💡
Typical users
- Logistics (high turnover, seasonal staff)
- Food production (seasonal business)
- Manufacturing with a high share of non-native speakers
- Fast-growing sites
⚠️
What you want to avoid
- Treating onboarding as a one-time event - make it a path with progress measurement
- Putting safety topics at the end - that is day 1, not week 4
- Keeping "learn by watching" - it does not scale
- Rewriting everything from scratch - link existing instructions into the path
KPI figures are industry benchmarks (SwipeGuide, REWO European auto case, POKA), not a GIRI guarantee.
